Distribution

The Distribution grid of today has become a dynamic network supporting critical loads and distributed generation sources with unpredictable flows depending on time of day and amount and type of renewable generation resident on a distribution feeder. This more complex network requires advanced monitoring and control as well as advanced analytics to held distribution operators meet their mission with highest reliability and highest customer satisfaction.

novoDIST provides the advanced distribution management functions needed to support reliable distribution grid operations in real time, with a parallel study analytics environment for operations planning. Using a detailed grid model and a topology engine, it provides network energization status (via color tracing) , as well as interactive upstream/downstream tracing. Operators can add temporary online elements (jumpers, grounds, cuts, mobile generators) that take effect immediately for tracing and analysis.

Integrated three-phase unbalanced power flow provides visibility into voltage and loading violations, and conditions causing grid elements approaching their limits. Per-phase state estimation can be performed across the whole network using all available measurements, redundant or partial, to provide a wholesome filtered state of the grid (Voltages and Angles and Flows) to the operator.

Short circuit analysis enables utilities to perform per-phase fault analysis on radial or looped feeders, accounting for fault contributions from motors and distributed generation. Fault location, isolation and service restoration (FLISR) capabilities help operators quickly locate faults, determine isolation and restoration strategies, and restore the healthy sections, cutting outage duration while verifying that restoration won’t create loading or voltage violations on the backup path.

To support network optimization, novoDIST includes optimal feeder reconfiguration, contingency analysis, load estimation, and optimal power flow (for loss or overload minimization). These tools work together to help evaluate potential outages and asset losses, identify effective switching actions, optimize load distribution, and determine the most efficient operating conditions for the network, and overall yielding the highest uptime for service, reduced restoration times, and improved quality of service for distribution customers.
